Innovative renewable future
Today's energy transition faces a major challenge: energy storage. As one may know, the sun doesn't always shine and the wind doesn't always blow. Due to this fluctuation in alternative energy resources, we are in need of a material to store energy in, during times of energy abundances. This energy ‘carrier’ should be free of CO2, and ideally infinitely reusable.
SOLID develops such a sustainable energy carrier: iron powder. This metal fuel releases useful high temperature heat, without CO2, when it is combusted, and has rust as leftover - this can be regenerated into iron powder, again.
Solar Team Eindhoven is ready for this year’s challenge: proving that cars can be a part of the solution to the energy transition, instead of being the problem. Stella Vie, built in 2017, proves that solar cars can be fossil fuel independent. This year the team expands their vision to take on mobility as a whole. They have committed themselves to prove that cars can be more than just a means of transportation. This has resulted in a design for a new solar car that takes another step in energy-efficient mobility and moves towards a future where life is powered by the sun.
