Metabolic aspects of heart failure

Miranda Nabben is assistant professor at the Department of Molecular Genetics at Maastricht University. Miranda obtained her master’s degree at Utrecht University and her PhD on metabolic disorders from Maastricht University. She has since then completed two postdoc positions at the University of Washington, Seattle, USA and at Eindhoven University of Technology. Miranda’s ambition is to treat cardiac disease via metabolic interventions. She is studying the relationship between structural, metabolic and functional changes in the failing heart to better understand the molecular triggers of heart failure and to identify new targets for treatment.

The Molecular Basis of the Ageing Heart

Emma is a junior postdoctoral researcher working in the Department of Cardiology at Maastricht University. She received her PhD in Biological Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 2018. Pivotal to the decline in function of the heart in old age is the reduced capability of the contractile muscle cells (cardiac myocytes) to regenerate in the event of gradual cell death over time or a heart attack. Emma will discuss her research on how she strives to understand this reduced ability of cardiac myocytes to divide in old age and how interventions might slow the ageing process in the heart.

What fills the heart

Blanche Schroen is a professor of experimental cardiology at the Department of Cardiology at Maastricht University. She is exploring new research avenues in the field of non-coding RNAs, focusing on long non-coding RNA mechanisms during cardiac failure
